The M48A5T1 / T2 Tanks are the main battle tank equipped with a 7.62 mm A4 machine gun and 12.7 mm (50 caliber) M2 anti-aircraft gun, which can be controlled from inside, with a 105 mm cannon, used by the Turkish Armed Forces.
The design of the M48 Patton tank, developed for the needs of the American army, dates back to 1948.
It has been in mass production since 1952.
It has undergone several modernizations due to its failure to meet expectations.
In 1955, the transmission elements were improved and the A1 version was released.
In 1956, it was upgraded to A2 version by adding a new petrol engine with injector and a high volume fuel tank.
In 1963, the M48 tank, whose engine was replaced with a diesel engine and transmission elements adapted from the M60A1 tank, was upgraded to the A3 version.
Finally, with the comprehensive change made in 1975, firing systems were developed and the latest version A5 model was emerged by installing 105 mm gun.
